WPIAL Finals Set
Top seeds Canon-McMillan and Jefferson-Morgan rolled to impressive semifinal victories Friday night. Meanwhile, Burrell and North Allegheny had to scratch and claw their way to berths in the WPIAL Finals. Burrell fell behind Chatiers-Houston early, but won five bouts in a row to take the lead for good. North Allegheny trailed Connellsville 19-0 before storming back, eventually getting a major decision in the final bout to avoid the NFHS tie-breaker system.

Canon-McMillan is seeking a third-straight Triple-A crown. Burrell is going for its sixth-straight championship.

Here's the Saturday schedule at Chartiers Valley:
2:00 pm Triple-A Third Place Match (winner qualifies for PIAA Tournament):
Greensburg Salem vs. Connellsville

4:00 pm Double-A Championship
Jefferson-Morgan vs. Burrell

6:30 pm Triple-A Championship
Canon-McMillan vs. North Allegheny

WPIAL Fields Trimmed to Four Teams
After 27 dual meets over the first three rounds, both WPIAL Team Tournament brackets have been trimmed to four teams each. In Double-A, the top four seeds powered their ways to the semifinals with home-gym wins in the quarterfinals: #1 Jeff-Morgan rolling Keystone Oaks, 65-7, #2 Chartiers-Houston ousting South Fayette, 44-21, #3 Burrell, the five-time defending WPIAL champion, beating Kittanning, 51-19, and #4 Bentworth outlasting Yough, 42-30.

In Triple-A, top-ranked Canon-McMillan beat Hempfield, 66-6 and #3 Connellsville beat Butler, 39-23. #5 Greensburg Salem knocked out #4 Hampton, 40-29, and #7 North Allegheny beat #2 Kiski Area, 36-31.

Semifinals are Friday at Ringgold High School, Double-A at 6 pm followed by Triple-A at 7:30 pm. All of Saturday's action, both finals and the Triple-A third-place match, is at Chartiers Valley High School, starting at 2:00 pm.

WPIAL Team Tournament Field Set
The Triple-A field started at 20 teams. Four were eliminated Monday in preliminary action at Chartiers Valley. Wednesday, four sites will host four-team, two-round groupings,, #1 Canon-McMillan, #2 Kiski Area, #3 Connellsville and #4 Hampton. Semifinals and finals are Friday/Saturday, Feb. 3-4. The top three teams qualify for the PIAA Team Tournament. The third-place team will see action against the Pittsburgh City League champion on Monday, Feb. 6. The Triple-A finalists are seeded directly into the brackets at Hershey, starting Thursday, Feb. 9.

Double-A will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 1 with 15 teams spread over four sites. Jefferson-Morgan, the top seed, has an opening-round bye, then faces the South Side Beaver/Keystone Oaks winner. The other three sites, Chartiers-Houston, Burrell and Bentworth, will host four-team, two-round groupings. Semifinals and finals, like Triple-A, are scheduled for Friday/Saturday, Feb. 3-4. The top two teams will advance to the PIAA Team Tournament in Hershey Feb. 9-11.

Let's Get Out There and Wrestle!
By the time this year's PIAA Wrestling Championship air on WJPA-AM and online via the MSA Sports Network in mid-March, WJPA Radio will have celebrated its 70th birthday--not with a lot of hoopla and fanfare, but by doing what's been done since the station went on the air March 1, 1942--bringing into people's cars, living rooms, offices and, now, computers/smart phones things happening at home and across the country. We've been provideing news and information, sports and entertainment for nearly as long as the PIAA has conducted these wrestling championships. And, for more than 60 years, the nation's best wrestling has been heard, start to finish, on the airwaves of WJPA Radio.

As has been the case for more nearly two decades now, all of our coverage--WPIAL & PIAA, Team & Individual--will be available on-air and on-line, thanks to our partnerships with the MSA Sports Network, EZ-Stream and the PIAA. We'll have Listen Here links, stories, recaps and bracket links all available here.

Over the years, WJPA has been trusted by listeners to bring home the action of the Pennsylvania's best wrestling. We've been true to that trust in the past and we have no plans of letting you down now. We hope you'll check back often as we move through the tournaments over the coming weeks.

While many things have changed since that March afternoon back in 1942, one thing that hasn't changed is that our crew will still give you every score of every bout we're covering here on WJPA. Enjoy the action!
